Have I mentioned art? D and I, on our tour of Lincoln's art wares, actually bought some. I'll have pix as soon as I can must both light and a steady hand.
In the meantime, content yourself with this tidbit: Composition and Sustainability: Teaching for a Threatened Generation by Derek Owens is a hell of a lot better than I was expecting. Is that saying much? Little? Well, it's a fine piece arguing--in the first few chapters--for using the composition classroom to point students toward awareness of their world. Sustainability is a way, he argues, to ground the holy trinity of critical pedagogy: race, class, gender. He opens up the concept of sustainability away from the classroom to have instructors ask about the physical reality and future of their institution as well as ask about the future of English Studies and the future of the academy in general.
Two more quick notes: First, a drab taiji class yesterday. Our instructor's on vacation, so we gathered around and watched a fellow student's DVD of Cheng Man-Ching. Very interesting (and I was able to identify some of the American students of Cheng, an odd thing). But the student is a "true believer," I think in any manner of things. In this case, the absolute and unquestioned supremacy of Cheng over all other taiji thinkers, writers, practitioners, etc. Cheng's is the only real taiji. Of course. Right. Nobody else has a clue. Uh-huh. He also talks like a history lecturer--at great length.
Second note is more fun: We're going to see the Saltdogs play tonight. Yeah, baby. The league-leading Saltdogs. Hot times.
