Scott Slovic blew through the department library yesterday for a nice long chat with a host o' folks. This is the Loren Eiseley centennial, and the Friends of LE are having a big partay all weekend long. Slovic is here for that, but Tom roped him into giving a real ecocrit talk for the English department. What was great about the crowd, though, was that we had scientists, engineers and historians in the crowd as well.
Slovic seems like a great guy. Relaxed, but engaged and curious. He's one of the founders of ASLE and ISLE, so it was a fantastic opportunity to hear about ecocrit straight from the mouth of god, as it were. More, new books keep appearing, which is both exciting and a drain on time and money. One piece of very good news is the taking up of the ideas of ecocrit across the world. It offers, in its small way, a chance to be both local and international at once, to be activist and scholarly (especially around issues of environmental justice), to pay attention to culture and nature, to engage deep history and the immediate present. Plus, it's a big tent. Got me all fired up again about working on my comps.
Hi and love to you and D from the farm!
