A weekend of work. While stuffing envelopes for the semi-annual "Mailing of Poems," I got a chance to watch the first episodes of Weeds. D's liking it more than I am, but I recognize that a situation comedy takes a while to find it's rhythm. Of course, if it's a choice between Weeds and King of Queens or 98% of other major network crap than you'll be delighted. It has dark edges, troubled characters, and some bark with laughter moments. Plus, scenes and language you'll never hear on straight-on tv. I'm intrigued enough with the stories and people to hang around until the end of the season, but I'm not going to be sad if I never see another episode.
Other details from the interwebs (as all bloggers are required to call our medium): I've added a new blog down at the bottom of the list: Planetary, Teaching the Environmental Humanities. I don't think it's been around long, but it has some heavy hitters in the community writing for it (and it seems to me that opening up a presentation to discussion should have the effect of building community across and between the audience and speaker. . .but I digress). Also, for a bit of feminism in science, you can drop by this spot and tut along with everyone else about trolls in research, and how the old guard of the university expresses its horror at its own demise (the trolls, not the new researchers, not women in science).
