Which for me came and went on Tuesday. Even though I spent most of the day at work, I had a lovely day. My co-workers decorated my office with black streamers and an "over the hill" balloon, also black. Something about turning forty makes people treat you...strangely. Especially if you're a man who still has his hair and has yet to acquire the softness about the middle that people tend to associate with getting older in this country. It also brings out a rather puzzling generosity. Which is of course quite nice, but in a bemusing sort of way. For the record, I received mostly boardgames and reference books, two passions of mine (the former newish, the latter abiding).
Saturday, D and I are hosting a party. Many, many invites went out. If you are a regular reader of this blog and didn't receive one...it's for one of three reasons: you live in Seattle, you live in Scotland (and thanks for the props, by the by), or we had so many random lists of random names that you fell through the cracks. You are all, of course, invited. But we figured that getting here from the far-flung bits of the world might be, you know, hard. Nevertheless, eight pm at our place. Our neighbor, also a grad student, had a recent birthday, so we're opening the whole house to guests in a way that it hasn't experienced since it was a single family dwelling.
Oh, and since another friend of ours had a birthday recently, we're taking the theme from the number of years separating us: Quinceanera. And yes, I have both a gown and a tiara. And yes, I will post pictures.
We'll talk about the Nebraska Arboretum's Great Plants series next week. I hope.
Happy Birthday! Have a great party too!
