Before the Month is Out

Some poetry stuff! The Poetry Foundation has a couple of interesting things going on on the web. Their blog, Harriet, can be quite lively, and they have a clutch of good podcasts you should check out. Sure, some are just people reading their poems. Very nice. But others include discussions of poems and poetry with poets and editors. These are worth giving a listen to.

For my own celebration, I will post five (!) versions/revisions of a poem I worked on last week. So, one revision a day. You can tell me which one you like best, though I warn you that each of them is a rough draft. They are all titled: The Man with Wasps Under His Eaves

she never believes him,
watches him drive his short car
into the tunnel of leaves
and he shrinks and shrinks
until he disappears, hands first,
into the smallest space she can see
at the end of the street

Wasps open their thin membrane wings
close again
nothing in them nothing under
lift is unexpected
vortices spiraling under and lifting

neither the man nor the heavy insects
care for physics the whir an indicator
anything but numbers
as the man, stocky—of old Greek stock—
takes his ice chipper
along the daubed tubes of egg and colony

black widows
other spiders stuffed in nests

scraper man wasp man
attic solid with hot air
wife shopping farther north and east
cell phone under streaked blond hair

man and wasp
concrete slab of driveway under them

very different eyes

the streaked blond woman asked
about the organ pipes of clay
dried out in cells along the wall
up under the carport

sweat
rare bare hands on scraper

a hum and buzz of insect
how to know when the nest is threatened
the cell phone bill
