One Friday evening about ten years ago, I was in a movie theater waiting for the movie to start and chatting with friends. I was expounding on my idea that humanity would be forced to reopen landfills to mine the discarded materials. What was once our trash--particularly metals and glass--would be the raw materials for future generations. And while that activity is going on mostly as a scavenging operation by the world's poor, I think I've heard of at least one person trying this out professionally. His pitch to municipalities is something like "Let me separate what's useful so that you can have more space to throw out what's not." But I might have imagined that I read that in, like, Grist.
What's germane to this post is that one of the people to whom I was expounding was the guy who wrote this article about issues of world hunger. I could go on here about short-sighted first world folk and their reactions to climate change and population, but I need to get other work done. So we'll talk later.
Thanks for the info….I am trying to put together a list of what celebs are doing to help the environment. Ed Begley Jr. is having a sweepstakes where he flys you to Hollywood and gives you tips on how to go green ( http://www.earthlab.com/life/livingwithed/ ) Pretty crazy stuff. Obviously there are many others. Drop me a link if you have any on the top of your head. Thanks again for the info!
